Synopsis - The Enterprise picks up Spock's parents on Vulcan to carry them and others to a diplomatic conference on Babel. While en route, one of diplomats is murdered and Spock's father Sarek is the prime suspect. Sarek is also ill and only Spock can save him.
Journey To Babel marks the Enterprise's second visit to Vulcan and the first appearances of Spock's Vulacan father and Terran mother. We get to learn a little bit more about Spock's childhood, as we learn of rift betwenn him and his father; and that he had a pet Selat , which we see when Spock visits his youth in the animated episode Yesteryear. It also marks the only time in any live action Star Trek episode that we get to see races such as the Tellarites. We would see an Andorian in two later Trek Classic episodes, The Gamesters Of Triskellion and Whom Gods Destroy.
Regardless of any rift that might be between them, this episode shows just how similar Spock and his father are in their patterns of logic and stubborness.
This also marks about the only episode where McCoy actually does get the last word.
