Synopsis - After discovering the wreckage of the SS Beagle, the crew is led to an Earth-like planet in the equivalent of the 1960s, only the Roman civilization never fell in its history. Here they learn that the Beagle's Captain, R. M. Merik, has violated the prime directive and has interfered in the society.
Bread And Circuses really delves into our own history and asks the question, what would civilization be like today, had the Roman Empire never fallen? Live telecasts of gladiator battles to the death, and runaway slaves. And yet there's Uhura's revelation at the end that the "Sun Worshipers" were actually "Son Worshipers" worshiping the Son of God; marking the birth of Christianity on that world.
