Synopsis - The Enterprise is diverted to space station K-7 to protect a shipment of quadrotriticale. Also in the neighborhood is a Klingon battle cruiser, wanting some R&R. But what causes the real trouble are little furry creatures called tribbles.
The Trouble With Tribbles is a fun romp into tribble, err trouble. It explores, in some detail, why it can be dangerous to remove animals from their natural habitat; in this case, the tribbles overbreed. Tribbles, although appearing in just this one live action episode of the Classic Trek, were quickly marked as standard Treklore at conventions all over the world.
A reference to Canada in this episode, presents an interesting factoid: the root grain of Quadrotriticale, Triticale, was the first manmade crop species, a hybrid of wheat and rye resembling wheat; it was developped at the University of Manitoba in Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1954. Tribbles would make a return twice to Trek, first in the Animated episode More Tribbles, More Troubles, along with a further mutation of the Triticale grain, Quintotriticale and characters Cyrano Jones and Captain Koloth. Their second appearance would be in the Deep Space Nine episode Trials And Tribble-ations.
Actor Michael Pataki, who plays Korox here, would return to Trek in the Next Generation episode Too Short A Season, playing the character of Karnas.
Actor William Campbell, who previously played Trelene in The Squire Of Gothos would also reprise his character for the More Tribbles, More Troubles, as well as the Deep Space Nine episode Blood Oath.
This episode provided a little more than the basis for the aforementioned DS9 episode Trials And Tribble-ations. Using the same technology that allowed Paramount's Forrest Gump to shake hands with JFK, characters from the DS9 series interacted in scenes with characters from this episode. Actor Charlie Brill also reprised his Arne Darvin character, aged a century, in that episode.
