Synopsis - The ship is attacked by a probe of unknown origin that almost destroys it. It stops its attack when it hears Kirk's name over communications. The probe, Nomad, turns out to an Earth probe launched in 2020. It's programming has been significantly altered and it even kills Scotty and erases Uhura's mind.
The Changeling gives us our first glimpse at how a "living", thinking machine would perceive humans. The subject has been dealt with time and again on Trek, particularly with the Borgs in the Next Generation universe. But this was our first glimpse. A science probe sent out two centuries earlier, returning back to find it's creator believeing it a mechanical machine, not an "imperfect biological lifeform". This episode also features another use of the Vulcan Mind Meld; this time with a machine.
