Synopsis - Spock starts to behave quite oddly and irrationally, and requests a leave of absence, which because of timing Kirk refuses. Regardless and not realizing it, Spock orders a course change to Vulcan without Kirk's consent. When McCoy discovers Spock is dying, Kirk orders a course for Vulcan for Spock's prearranged marriage and wedding, where Kirk ends up in a fight against Spock to the death.

Amok Time, as the Second season premiere, gives us our first glimpse of true Vulcan culture, from the hand salute (which Nimoy took from a Jewish custom he witnessed as a boy) to their mating rituals, to their planet's thin atmosphere. Actress Celia Lovsky turned in a powerful performance as T'Pau, even though she had trouble with the Vulcan hand salute. Nimoy's performance too was exceptional in this episode, as he kept you guessing just what was the matter with him in the beginning. This episode also showed us Chapel's continuing crush on Spock, which we first learned about in The Naked Time.

According to a story, often told by Nimoy at conventions, and I believe relayed in 1-hour 1983 special, "Leonard Nimoy's Star Trek Memories", the week after this episode aired, Nimoy was riding along in a car, and a woman pulled up to him and gave him the Vulcan salute, and he said, "That's fine, but can you do it with your left hand?" to which the woman tried unsuccessfully, and responded, "I speak it with an accent."

*Who's That On The Cover With Spock?

Comments:
What is the name of the actor in the stange mask that is featured on the coverbox for this episode (see above) posing with Spock? I've checked everywhere. Have I reached the limit of "too trivial" for Star Trek trivia?
