Synopsis - Transporting Commissioner Nancy Hedford to the Enterprise for Medical treatment, the shuttle carrying her is forced to crash land on a planet by a mysterious cloud creature, who will not let them leave. On the planet, they find a young Zefram Cochrane, the discoverer of the space warp, who supposedly died over a hundred years ago at the age of 87. Kirk must find a way to get off the planet and back to the ship before the commissioner dies.
Metamorphosis is a story of physical attraction and love between two people completely alien to one another. The Companion (voiced by Majel Barrett) trapped Cochrane first for companionship, and then fell in love with him, an emotion it was unable to relay to him, until Spock adapted the universal translator to communicate with it.
This by the way was the first mention of the Universal Translator in the series. We would see the character of Zephram Cochrane again in the film First Contact, where we also witness his first Warp test flight with the "Phoenix".
