A quote from this episode has been featured in the Quote-of-the-Week.
Synopsis - While on Pyris VII, the crew discovers a haunted castle and a black cat. The Enterprise is held hostage and McCoy, Sulu, and Scotty are turned into zombies.
Catspaw was the first episode produced for the second season, and brought in the character Ensign Pavel Chekov, a young Russian officer, brought in for two reasons. The first, and most notable reason, is that Roddenberry had read in a Russian newspaper somwhere saying something to the effect that they (the Russians) were the first ones in space, and with all the races on the latest American space show, there were no Russians. The second reason was to appeal to the younger audiences by putting a Davey Jones type character.
This was the first and only episode to make any actual reference to Hallowe'en and aired appropriately three days before Hallowe'en 1967. Although not officially referenced in the episode, the three witches warning off Kirk, Spock and McCoy can easily be compared to the three witches of Shakespeare's MacBeth.
