Synopsis: In this two-part episode, the Enterprise is diverted to Starbase 6, supposedly by former Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike, now extremely disabled. First officer Spock beams Pike to the Enterprise, sets course for Talos IV, the penalty for which is death, and claims Kirk is on extended rest leave. Kirk catches up to Spock in a shuttle with Commodore Mendez. A hearing is convened in which images sent from Talos are seen, depicting images of 13 years previous.

    Editorial:

    T
he Menagerie was more a less just a vehicle for Roddenberry to make use of his unaired pilot, The Cage. The story around the flashbacks, is actually not that bad; a court case of kidnapping and Starship mutiny with Mr. Spock as the accused. As actor Jeffrey Hunter was unavailable to reprise the role of Captain Pike, Roddenberry wrote the character in as a nearly unrecognizable cripple, confined to a futuristic-looking wheelchair, and was therefore able to use Actor Sean Kenney to play the part. Sean Kenney would appear several times again in the series as Lt. DePaul. Actor Malachi Throne pulled double duty in this episode as the voice of the Keeper in the flashbacks and the final scene where the Keeper talked to Kirk; and as Commodore José Mendez; the actor would return to Trek in the Next Generation fifth season 2-parter Unification. Also, actress Majel Barret is credited here as M. Leigh Hudec.
